Le Roi Danse (The King Dances), 2019-21
With this series of paintings Çetinkaya examines the cultural identity of the Middle Easterner who has been trained to see the world from a Eurocentric point of view by juxtaposing source imagery such as Anatolian rug motifs and Turkish figures from 19th century French Orientalist paintings, with portrayals of Louis XIV the Sun King, his famous dancewear and 17th century French ballet costume designs.
In several paintings from this body of work, The Sun King who was famously known for his passion for dancing and ballet is depicted as a Turkish belly dancer, in other paintings the dancing figure adorned in his opulent costumes is directly painted on Anatolian area rugs with heavy bodied impasto paint.
